OH YAH was just studying Bio just now! I love Bio, okay okay let me try to see if I remember (get ready for a paragraph of digestion and creepy nerd-ness.) Okay, Buccal cavity leads to the pharynx, which leads to both the oesophagus and the larynx (voice box). The larynx leads to the trachea (windpipe), which leads to the lungs. The larynx has a slit-like opening called the glottis. Food and air need to pass through the pharynx before entering the larynx or the oesophagus. When swallowing, to prevent food or water from entering the trachea, the epiglottis, a flap-like tissue located behind the root of the tongue and above the larynx, moves downwards whilst the larynx moves up, and therefore the epiglottis would be covering the larynx, so the food will not be able to enter the larynx. Occasionally, when food or water enter the larynx to the trachea, violent coughing would result to get the food or water out to prevent choking. YEAHHHHHHH. I got it, mostly, I think!
